Welfare Wednesday

Welcome back to your Decembers edition of Welfare Wednesday!

If you caught last weeks post you’ll know that this month is based on addiction. This week we are going to dive a little deeper into exercise addiction.

Over-exercising is when we do more exercise than our body can handle. This can include doing too much exercise or exercising in an unsafe way, or not eating enough food alongside exercising.

Over-exercising is different for different people. One person might feel ok doing a certain amount of exercise. But the same amount could be over-exercising for someone else.

Exercise addiction is a type of over-exercising, when we feel a lack of control over how much exercise we do

What causes exercise addiction?

🏃🏻‍♀️Pressure to perform or improve

🏃🏻‍♀️Body image

🏃🏻‍♀️Stigma about weight

🏃🏻‍♀️Incorrect information about exercise

🏃🏻‍♀️Over-dependence on exercise

What are the signs of exercise addiction?

🏃🏻‍♀️Exercise when you’re injured or unwell

🏃🏻‍♀️Not taking rest days

🏃🏻‍♀️Feeling anxious if you don’t exercise

🏃🏻‍♀️Feel a compulsive need to exercise

🏃🏻‍♀️Exercise in secret

With the festive period coming up remember it’s ok to take a few more rest days and enjoy the time with your family. However we are always here if you need help.

There are many ways you can seek help if you are struggling with addiction. You can speak to your GP or contact an organisation which specialises in addiction such as Mind

As always, your welfare team are here if you need help!
