Welfare Wednesday
Welfare Wednesday!
For our last week on summer running we are looking at breathing.
Your running speed and ease will depend on the temperature and the different seasons, especially the summer months…
When you run in the heat, your body sweats to cool you down. Humidity prevents your body’s ability to dissipate heat, because your sweat doesn’t evaporate. The moisture of humidity also makes it harder to breathe, which means your muscles aren’t getting the oxygen they need to power your stride.
When it’s hot and humid, especially when you’re not used to it, you’re going to slow down. That’s a fact! However if you are able to run in hot conditions over a few weeks your body will soon acclimatise.
Your pace can slow anywhere from 5% to 15%. Taking a run slower will make it easier for your body to breathe.
Take a look at our previous posts for our top tips on running in hot weather!
