London Marathon 2025 - Training Blog #2

My Journey to London. 35 days gone 90 to go.

Over the last 4 weeks we have been soaked and blown about like no other January I can remember.

After 26 days of training in January, which has included 15 runs and 147 KMs, the nerves are still there but the confidence has grown a little. Typically in 2024 I have been running 70/80 Kms a month so I am pleased to have pushed this up, without overtraining too quickly.

Many of you that know me see me out running. Don’t be fooled by everything you see. Entering the London Marathon means I suffer from all the insecurities that someone might get from entering an event like this. Especially at the age of 54 when the body doesn’t always do what you want it to do, such as when you think you have an injury and you just have to remind yourself it hurts because you are not 20 anymore.

Having said that this months training has gone very well. 4 days a week running and 2 days a week strength has been the plan. The rest day feels like a real treat and when you fall asleep on the massage table you know you needed that days break.

The thing that has made a difference this month has been the variety of sessions. Without a focussed plan,  I am such a creature of habit, knocking out the same 10k distance, on the same route, at the same time of day and recording the same time.

This month I have had

  • 10k, 15k and 22k runs both road and trail.

  • Interval session, Tempo session, endurance session and hill session.

  • Differing strength session with a focus on core. (My dancing hips are weak).

  • A coach badgering me to keep it all on track. Thanks Andy.

I am a bit of a stat man when it comes to running. The Strava graph attached shows improved fitness levels for the last month which is positive. This is based on your heart rate data and some other metrics and serves as a benchmark for how you are improving. Better keep this going now!

Thank you to all those friends I have been out running with this month. I much prefer running with others and finding new routes.

Hopeful for continued progress and better weather in February.
