Welfare Wednesday
This week we are focusing on how to support someone living with dementia.
Support should be sensitive to the person as an individual and should be focused on promoting their wellbeing and needs. The person with dementia may be experiencing a world that is very different to people around them. To understand and support, try and see things from their perspective and their coping strategies.
What can you do to help❓
🔹Practical strategies: setting up reminders or prompts
🔹 Social strategies: rely on family help and join new activity groups
🔹 Emotional strategies: use humour and focus on short-term pleasure/living in the moment
🔹Health improvement strategies: exercising more and developing health habits
The way a person reacts to dementia will depend on their personality, previous experiences, understanding of dementia and the social and emotional support they receive. People may adopt different coping strategies at different times and some people may not acknowledge that they have dementia.
